Baudick introduces multi-material additive manufacturing technology combined with post-processing and 3D printing

March 08, 2023

Manufacturing functionally integrated components with complex geometries is one of the main advantages of 3D printing technology , but 3D printed components also face the challenge of improving the internal and surface quality of the part. Post-processing 3D printed parts is an effective way to improve surface quality.

Heat treatment is a controlled process used to alter the microstructure of metals, alloys, and the like. British Baudick introduced the new Powdermet technology to combine metal additive manufacturing with near net shape.

Powdermet is introduced for additive manufacturing processes that use powder metallurgy to produce complex parts. With the launch of Powdermet, the next generation of metal 3D printed parts will soon be enhanced.

Powdermet consists of four separate modes: Powdermet and 3D Print Hybrid, Powdermet3D Print, Powderemet Near NetShape, and Powdermet Select NearNearNetShape.

Perhaps the most interesting technique is the mixing with the 3D printing process, which combines NNS-near net shape or SSNS-selective near-net shape and 3D printing to significantly reduce cost and production time to produce fully bonded parts, mixing process Multi-metal materials are also allowed.

Baudick said the Powdermet service kit has some distinct advantages, including complete powder consolidation, which provides a uniform crystalline structure and eliminates internal porosity and unconsolidated powder defects.

These methods can also produce parts with varying surface features and thicknesses, and provide the need to satisfy the need to braze or weld the parts together by cutting to form a larger structure.

In addition, the different parts of the part can be formed from different alloys to achieve the ideal and most cost-effective solution. Component design can be tailored to actual performance requirements and is not limited by subsequent processing operations.

Stephen Harris, CEO of Bowdick Group, commented: "The breakthrough brought by Powdermet is a true game-changing technology for the design and manufacture of parts in the field of metal additive manufacturing. These solutions can be adapted to a wide range of industries. These include aerospace, oil and gas, power generation and mining."

Materials that can be used in Powdermet include stainless steel (304L, 316L, 316LN), martensitic stainless steel (17/4PH, 13/8PH, 15/5PH, X4CrNiMo), duplex stainless steel (duplex 2205, super duplex 2505), Ni Base alloys (IN625, IN690, IN713, IN718, IN728, IN925, IN939, C22, 247LC, Supermet60+, Supermet60, Supermet50, Waspaloy), Co-based alloys (Stellite 1, 3, 6, 12 and 21), Titanium ( CPTi, Ti6Al4V, TiAl, Ti6Al2Sn4Zr2Mo), aluminum (Al-Si alloy, Al6061, AlSi10Mg), cobalt chromium molybdenum and tungsten alloy. Metal 3D printed parts manufactured using Powdermet technology are subjected to heat treatment and hot isostatic pressing.

Combining more than 30 years of experience and cutting-edge capabilities, Baudick has developed a number of specialized treatment technologies that improve the wear resistance, erosion resistance and corrosion resistance of the parts to maintain the high quality, safety and efficiency of the parts.
